Luatha Vain

Luatha Vain was a high elf raised by her adventurer parents in various places throughout Aquerra, including the elven homeland Tempestas. It was from them that she learned both her stealthy and arcane skills, but the latter was often just a means for her to improve the former. A natural trickster, thief, and liar, she spent most of her long life only caring about herself and satisfying her desires for wealth, sex and adventure.

After a failed attempt to found an adventuring group in Teamsburg (where a couple of her would-be adventuring companions objected to her robbery of a tavern till), she went traveling in Derome-Delem where she met Jack of Hearts and joining up went to Thricia, where they performed robberies and tricks together, and developed a romantic relationship. However, when Jack of Hearts suddenly left her, Luatha ended up running into Gilvorak Steelhand and his adventuring companions (now known as The Sign of Four) and decided to accompany them to the Kingdom of Neergaard, hoping to benefit from Dresden the Black's connection to the court of that nation, and find the trail of her lover Jack, whom she thought might have headed to Neergaard.

Traveling with The Sign of Four through the Lusian Forest, Luatha was killed by the screech of a banshee, but brought back to life by the waters of the Shrine of the Waters of the Sun in the Veronian Mountains. This resurrection caused a change of heart, and she suddenly saw the error of her ways, her selfishness, and how withholding information from the group regarding Jack of Hearts was endangering them and their mission to save Prince Edmund Crownen. Ultimately, however, it was Luatha's relationship with Jack of Hearts that helped the party broker a deal, get Jack of Hearts to betray his Neergaardian allies, and save the crown-prince.

Luatha Vain would cause a small stir in Neergaardian noble circles after spending a lot of time with the newly crowned young king in the weeks The Sign of Four would spend in Dunthrinane leading up to and following the coronation.

The Sign of Four undertook a few more adventures in Neergaard before moving on. During this time Luatha was nearly sacrificed by a drow priestess, and was shrunk down to a few inches in height along with the rest of the party due to the magic of Chadranther's Bane. The change of heart that came over her after her ressurrection began to mellow the longer she was back among the living, and while she was never again selfish or cruel, her trickster streak and love of personal freedom re-emerged.

Leaving Neergaard, Luatha and the Sign of Four traveled to the Republic of Erthage to take on a job scouting out a sahaugin fortress. Fleeing the sinking fortress the group passed through the territory of a black dragon, and in the ensuing battle, Luatha was torn to shreds by its claws.

The surviving members of the Sign of Four preserved her body, waiting for a chance to bury her in elven soil or return her to life, but the corpse was stolen off of their ship Grace along with that of the priestess the ship was named for. It was never determined what happened to her body, thought it was assumed it was taken by the same Setites that took the other one.

Description: Luatha Vain was about five feet nine inches tall, pale and very thin, with long hair of dull gold highlighted with light lavender, and bright green eyes. She had a fey beauty that entranced some and discomforted others.
